Katrina: Marie-Antionette-isms

In Uncategorized on 09/10/2005 at 09:31

These took me all of five minutes to collect:

Urban Renewal:
The Wall Street Journal reported that Representative Richard Baker of
Baton Rouge was overheard telling lobbyists: "We finally cleaned up
public housing in New Orleans. We couldn’t do it, but God did."

Reaching out to our Children:
"Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?" – Tom Delay (Tommy Boy) to flood-refugee kids.

Margaritaville:
"I’m going to go home and walk my dog and hug my wife and, maybe
get a good Mexican meal and a stiff margarita and a full night’s sleep.
And then I’m going to go right back to FEMA and continue to do all I
can to help these victims,"  – Michael Brown (Brownie) prior (?) to his removal from Katrina Relief Ops (though not from his job as director of FEMA).

Compassionate Conservatism:
"Almost everyone I’ve talked to says we’re going to move to Houston [...] What I’m hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality.
"And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this–this (chuckles ) is working very well for them." Babara Bush (Babs)

Accountability:
"Brownie, you’re doing a helluva job." – George W. Bush, President, The United States of America.

Katrina: “Go Fuck Yourself, Mr. Cheney, Go Fuck Yourself”

In Uncategorized on 09/10/2005 at 06:50

The story of what happen before and after the second-best sound-byte of the week. Dr. Marble is  an ER physician. The whole story is quite interesting, from the motorcade crossing the barracade early to law-enforcement reaction after the fact. It also includes the de rigueur pulling down (and inevitable re-instatement) of a related ebay listing.

OpEdNews.Com Progressive, Tough Liberal News and Opinion.

Best sound-byte of the week still has to be Kayne West — or is anyone prepared to argue that George Bush DOES care about black people. Apparently .

I don’t know how much more Marie-Antionette talk I can take this week. (Katrina)

"While on the tour of a shelter with top administration officials from Washington, including U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao and U.S. Treasury Secretary John W. Snow, DeLay stopped to chat with three young boys resting on cots.

"The congressman likened their stay to being at camp and asked, ‘Now tell me the truth boys, is this kind of fun?’

They nodded yes, but looked perplexed."

Katrina: Bush says federal response ‘not acceptable’

In Uncategorized on 09/02/2005 at 06:24

"The White House on Thursday made available top [Amry Corps of Engineers] officials to assure reporters that cuts to the agency’s budget did not cause the Katrina disaster. Even though the administration has chronically cut back on the Corps’ own requests for funding — including two key New Orleans-area projects — White House officials trumpeted the administration’s support for the Corps.
‘Flood control has been a priority of this administration from Day One,’ McClellan said."

Bolding mine.

"In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war." LINK

Corpse Blossoms Update

In Uncategorized on 09/01/2005 at 14:48

Not to long ago, and straight out of the blue, I received a complimentary email about my story "Wednesday" from a very talented writer, editor and bon homme* of my acquaintance. This friend happened to see the piece in advance of its publication in Corpse Blossoms and I was flattered he took the time out to write to me about it.

Corpse Blossoms will be out later in the year or early next year. As many may have heard, the editors of the book, RJ & Julia Sevin, live in New Orleans — though they are safely away from the flooding, hoteling it in Houston, surviving, heads held high, like so many others. Despite all this they want people to know they are going ahead with the anthology. Signature sheets for the limited edition have already gone out, and this other kick-ass writer (one whom I don’t know) has already signed his.

This anthology has stories by many of the best horror writers living: Steve Rasnic Tem, Tom Piccirilli, Bentley Little, Ramsey Campbell and many others. It’s going to be (and I have no reason to lie to you, I’ve already been paid and spent the money) the horror collect of the year. It will win the Bram Stoker Award for best original anthology. It will sell out quick. How I got in, I’ll never know. But forget about that. Don’t delay on this one, you can pre-order now at the Publisher’s SITE. Drop in and pay RJ and Julia a visit.

Peace out!
