If fiction at the professional level, especially sf and fantasy fiction, interests you, the annual Clarion Science Fiction Writer’s Workshop will run this summer from June 26 – August 4, 2006. Apply at the link. Apply now before something stops you. Need reasons? Samuel R. Delany, Joe and Gay Haldeman, Nancy Kress, Gardner Dozois, Kelly Link, and Holly Black. Need more reasons? You will spend six weeks thinking about writing, talking about writing, and writing. You will make friends you will keep for the rest of your life. You will get a T-shirt.
And one more thing. The annual Best American Short Stories (2005) contained three stories from what are commonly referred to as "genre writers": meaning fantasy, science fiction, horror, and slipstream ("Slipstream" is also the name of a direct-to-DVD movie starring Sean Astin, best know for "LOTR" but, anyway).  And who wrote these three stories great American stories? Three Clarion graduates: Cory Doctorow (’92), Kelly Link (’95), Tim Pratt (’99).
